 2017

Company: Medical Director / VANDAL
Product: Helix

Customer Audience:
  • End-product customers at industry conferences
  • Potential partners

A journey mapping workshop kicked off a storytelling session, spawning a 3-minute immersive VR experience, created in collaboration with Sydney-based creative studio VANDAL.
My first project at Medical Director was to create a journey map of a typical GP visit cycle.  This artefact would help to inform our backlog and roadmap, moving forward.

To get my head around the industry, customers, and needs, I held a workshop with the (brand new) design team and the established product team, to trade knowledge.  Together, we mapped out the experience with the usual UX tools.

With our journey in place, we began analyzing touchpoints where it could be improved, and ideating on what those improvements might be.  We looked to other, consumer-focused industries for inspiration--
  • Could the check-in be done independently, like a flight?
  • Could patients update their own records, like social media profiles?
  • Could waiting rooms be more engaging, with interactive games?
  • Could doctors use data from wearables to track fitness?
  • Could a smart system cross-reference a patient's history to link cause and effect?  To predict future health concerns?

Our ideal journey seemed felt feasible, with today's technology.  We set a bar for 2021— this is the near future our roadmap should aim toward.  With a company rebrand on the horizon, it seemed only logical to share this vision with our customers.

We found an excellent partner in a local creative studio, VANDAL.  Shooting over the course of a day, we transformed a few rooms of the Medical Director office into a doctor's practice, casting employees as extras.
The result was overwhelmingly positive.  For many of our customers, this would be their first experience with VR— one they could take home and share with colleagues.

In addition to engaging with an attainable, rosy vision of their industry's future, it positioned the company as a forward-thinking, modern enterprise.
