Release: 2018
Industry: Disability services
Customer Audience:
  • People with disability
  • Families of PWD
  • Disability support workers
Hireup is an online platform for people with disability to find, hire, and manage support workers who fit their needs and share their interests.

People seeking support can recruit and employ workers of their own choice, based on common ground factors like location and work type, as well as shared interests— The service enabled them can communicate, organise bookings, and manage payroll all in one place.

Founded in 2015 (and winner of Deloitte's Fast 50 for 2017), Hireup very quickly grew out from its roots in the traditional disability services world.

As the first UX/Product person on the team, my role focused on finding opportunities to automate processes, freeing up our HQ staff to provide valuable human service to users on both sides of the platform, as they learned to navigate the world of self-managed support, or become support workers for the first time.

By monitoring our major growth vectors, I identified efficient solutions to support the goals of the business.  As the company expanded, I oversaw the growth of my own team, bringing on a researcher and junior designer from our community, integrating them into our production processes, and furthering our commitment to user-centered design.

Here are a few case studies of my work at Hireup

Expediting Onboarding
With safety, security, and privacy as key issues of the platform, registration is necessarily stringent.

How do we present the process in a way that feels transparent and engaging, moves as quickly as possible, and frames the hurdles as value-adds to the product?

Automating Documentation
As an employee of Hireup, each new support worker needs to verify their identity, safety and legal clearance, and rights to work.

This project created an automated repository to collect and organise documents efficiently and securely, enabling the user to self-manage an update when one approaches expiry.

Project Dossier: Support Plans Evolved
A key factor in a successful professional relationship is a shared expectation of the work. Traditional support plans can be lengthy, clinical, and impersonal— tricky to reference, apply, and retrofit into a new system.

This project explored ways to integrate support needs into the larger platform, allowing the PWD ultimate control over when, where, and how elements were shared and utilised.
